Hello!

Welcome to Reel Queer. We are two university students who want to explore queer themes and ideas brought up in various movies throughout history. We plan to watch a new movie every week and produce a detailed blog post outlining what we watched and learned. We will also be reading scholarly articles to further our understanding.

Although we do not have a final list of movies we will be watching, we are open to suggestions. Here is a tentative list of films we might watch (in no particular order):

  • Imagine Me and You
  • Boys Don’t Cry
  • Philadelphia
  • Party Monster
  • But I’m a Cheerleader
  • The Crying Game
  • Plan B
  • I Love You Philip Morris
  • Velvet Goldmine
  • The Four-Faced Liar
  • Bi the Way
  • Heavenly Creatures
  • Tying the Knot
  • Mysterious skin
  • My Own Private Idaho
  • Angels in America
  • Ma Vie En Rose
  • Maurice
  • Bent
  • C.R.A.Z.Y.
  • The Times of Harvey Milk
  • Aimee and Jaguar
  • etc

Some themes we might explore include:

  • Trans* representation
  • Affection between same sex vs. sexuality/sensuality between same sex
  • Queer stereotypes
  • Common tropes
  • Queers as villains
  • Queers as jokes
  • Race
  • Religion
  • Gay marriage
  • Bisexuality
  • The Closet/coming out
  • Gender binaries within relationships
  • Body image
  • etc

The first film we will write about is The Celluloid Closet so check back soon for our thoughts on it!

Cheers,

Kelsey and Brontë
